Gyeongbokgung Palace adalah istana kerajaan pertama dan terbesar yang dibina pada zaman Dinasti Joseon Dibina pada tahun 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace terletak di tengah-tengah ibu kota Seoul yang baru (ketika itu dikenali sebagai Hanyang) dan mewakili kedaulatan Dinasti Joseon. Lima Istana Besar yang terbesar (lain adalah Gyeonghuigung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace), Gyeongbokgung berfungsi sebagai istana utama Dinasti Joseon. Pemerintah Korea telah meluangkan banyak waktu dan usaha untuk membangun kembali, memulihkan, dan memelihara istana untuk generasi akan datang. Usaha-usaha ini merangkumi usaha membina semula dan memulihkan bangunan yang musnah semasa penjajahan Jepun. Pelawat yang datang ke Gyeongbokgung juga boleh melawat National Palace Museum of Korea dan National Folk Museum of Korea kerana ianya terletak di kawasan istana. Untuk meningkatkan kemudahan akses dari Istana Gyeongbokgung ke Seochon dan sebaliknya, pintu barat istana, Yeongchumun, dibuka untuk umum pada Disember 2018. Selama 43 tahun yang lalu, hanya ada 3 pintu masuk ke Istana Gyeongbokgung – pintu gerbang selatan, Gwanghwamun, pintu gerbang utara, Sinmumun, dan pintu masuk National folk Museum of Korea. Walau bagaimanapun, dengan pembukaan pintu Yeongchumun barat, kemasukan ke istana dari semua arah kini telah menjadi kenyataan.
