Changgyeonggung Palace dibina pada tahun 1483 oleh Raja Seongjong (raja kesembilan dari Dinasti Joseon) untuk menjaga isteri para raja sebelumnya. Berbanding dengan istana lain, ukuran istana ini lebih ringkas dan sederhana. Changgyeonggung Palace dihubungkan dengan Changdeokgung Palace. Istana ini terletak di sebelah timur istana utama Gyeongbokgung, jadi ia juga dipanggil sebagai "Donggwol," "Istana Timur."
Myeongjeongjeon adalah dewan utama istana, di mana urusan berkaitan negara diadakan, seperti mesyuarat dengan pegawai dan penerimaan utusan asing. Myeongjeongjeon juga merupakan contoh utama gaya seni bina Joseon abad ketujuh belas yang luar biasa dan merupakan dewan utama tertua berbanding istana-istana lain. Kebanyakan bangunan istana telah dimusnahkan oleh Jepun semasa pencerobohan Jepun ke Korea pada tahun 1592. Bangunan-bangunan utama seperti Myeongjeongjeon, Munjeongjeon (dewan majlis), Hwangyeongjeon (Dewan), Inyangjeon (Dewan), Gongsacheong, dan Honghwamun (Gerbang) dibina semula oleh Raja Gwanghaegun (raja kelima belas dari Dinasti Joseon). Semasa penjajahan Jepun, orang Jepun membina sebuah zoo di kawasan itu dan menamakan semula istana itu "Changgyeongwon," yang bermaksud "Taman Changgyeong." Sejak tahun 1987, istana ini telah dibina semula dan kini menyerupai bentuk asalnya.
